ABC of NC in collaboration with Champions in Motion offers a FREE adaptive martial arts program for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder. The program goal is to help individuals with autism gain self-confidence and increase concentration.
Instructor: Cindy Andree Bowen, Board Certified Behavior Analyst and first-degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, will provide self-defense instruction with the assistance of ABC of NC staff and/or Black Belt instructors from Champions in Motion.
Instructor: Allison Hall, Registered Behavior Technician and first-degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, will provide instruction in self-defense and healthy physical activity with the assistance of ABC of NC staff and/or Black Belt instructors from Champions in Motion.
Schedule: All sessions are offered on Monday evenings to members of the community with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis or with demonstrated characteristics of ASD. Neurotypical (NT) siblings are also invited.
- “Mighty Champions” for Ages 4–8, Individualized Instruction, 4–4:30 p.m.
This class is for students who would have difficulty participating in the groups listed below due to significant communication and/or social challenges. This class has a 10-student capacity. No slots are available for NT siblings. First come, first served. Students in this class should have: ability to follow simple instructions and minimal to no aggressive/self-injurious behavior. - “Little Champions” for Ages 4–8, Group Instruction, 4:30–5 p.m.
This class has a 15-student capacity with 4 slots available for NT siblings (siblings may be older than age 7). First come, first served. Students in this class should have: some imitation skills, some interest in same-aged peers, ability to follow routines/simple instructions, and minimal to no aggressive/self-injurious behavior. - “Big Champions” for Ages 9–18, Group Instruction, 5–5:30 p.m.
This class has a 15-student capacity with 4 slots available for NT siblings (siblings should be at least 8 years old). First come, first served. Students in this class should have: some imitation skills, some interest in same aged peers, ability to follow routines/simple instructions, and minimal to no aggressive/self-injurious behavior.
